Bioinformatics is the emerging field yet most needed technique for present research related to any domain of life science, but there is huge lack of expertise in this domain of science. To address this issue, Dr. Swati Goswami and her team from the Department of Microbiology, School of science, RK University, Rajkot, organized a six day faculty development program named “Hands on workshop on Bioinformatics and Biostatistics” which was sponsored by GSBTM. There were 30 participants including Faculties and Research scholars from different Universities and Colleges of in and around Gujarat like Mangalore University, Karnataka, Ukatarsadia University, VNSGU, Surat, MS University, Baroda. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Jayashankar Das, joint director of Gujarat Biotechnology Research Center, Gandhinagar. Throughout the six days, different expert from Anand Agriculture University, VNSGU, and GBRC having more than 10 to 15 years of experience were invited to deliver hands on sessions. The modules of workshop focused on hands on sessions and various Bioinformatics and Biostatistics tools like Data mining from biological databases like NCBI, EMBL, DDBJ, Gene sequence analysis using tools like BLAST, CLUSTAL, SwisProt, Phylogenetic tree construction using MEGA. The workshop also offered dedicate session on interpretation and analysis of Next generation sequencing data which has tremendous application the all domains of biology. The tools like MG-RAST and STAMP were also practiced by participants, which is very helpful for metagenomic data analysis. For genomic data analysis participants learned to use NCBI-GENOME viewer and DFAST tool. Beyond this, participants also got to practice Excel and SPSS tools which are very helpful for statistical analysis on any kind of biological data. All these tools have frequent application in the field of biological data analysis and beneficial for participants as they can apply these skills in their research or Ph.D. program. This workshop was unique in the sense that it was amalgam of subject with yoga and ice breaking activities during the sessions. The feedback of participants was overwhelming. They all appreciated the efforts put by the organizers. All participants were very enthusiastic and satisfied with what they learned during entire session. They all said that they have learned a lot many things from this workshop and requested the organizers to organize many such events.
