About Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme
The doctoral program leading towards the award of the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) provides the students an opportunity for a career in academia or in R&D establishments. RKU aspires to take a leading role in the research areas related to all fields of Science, Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physiotherapy, Computer Applications and Management.

Eligibility
Candidates must have a post-graduate (master’s) degree with at least 55% marks or equivalent CGPA and must be qualified in national level test like UGC/CSIR (JRF) examination/CSIR (SRF)/NET/SLET/GATE/GPAT/M. Phil etc. or its equivalent examinations of similar level or RKU Research Aptitude Test (RAT). Selection will be on the basis of interview of shortlisted candidates. The decision of the concerned authorities of RKU regarding eligibility of any candidate shall be final.

Program Structure
There are two categories of registration.
1. Full Time Program (FTP)
2. External Registration Program (ERP)
FTP candidates must work on the campus during the entire program.
ERP candidates do not need to work on the campus. Instead, they must regularly report to the Doctoral Research Committee/monitoring Committee.
Conventionally the duration of the doctoral program is between 3-4 years. The program comprises both coursework and research work. The amount of coursework, one has to undergo, depends on the candidates' past background and the research he/she is engaged in. The research work to be undertaken for Ph.D. must include original contribution to the knowledge reserve culminating in a thesis to be submitted for the doctoral degree.

Fee Structure

1st Year  Rs. 60,000
2nd Year  Rs. 30,000
3rd Year  Rs. 30,000
4th Year and Onwards  Rs. 30,000
Thesis Evaluation Fees  Rs. 15,000

The University reserves the right to revise the fee and payment structure.

Financial Assistance
Candidates admitted under the FTP category will be eligible for financial support in the form of Teaching Assistantship (TA) / Research Assistantship (RA), subject to RKU regulations. The assistantship is Rs. 12,000/- per month. For deserving candidates, the starting figure of the assistantship may be higher. The responsibilities associated with the teaching / research assistantship includes conducting laboratory courses and tutorials for undergraduate students, assisting in teaching, academic administration and forming research proposals. Notwithstanding anything mentioned above, the Dean of the concerned school may prescribe varying workload and type of work.

Candidates are advised to write their name and the program applied for (PhD) at the backside of the DD or cheque. The institute takes no responsibility for loss of DD or cheque in transit. Candidates need to indicate in which school of RKU they wish to be admitted in the application form.

Selection/Admission Process
Every year, there will be 2 admission sessions to PhD programme in RK University viz. January and June. The selection process for admission to PhD programme of RK University will comprise of 2 stages; 1. Research Aptitude Test (RAT) and 2. Personal Interview.

Candidates who have passed a national level test like UGC/CSIR (JRF) examination/CSIR (SRF)/NET/SLET/GATE/GPAT/M. Phil etc. or its equivalent, will not be required to appear in the written entrance test (RAT) conducted by the university, provided that the score of the examination is valid on the date of RAT.

RAT Examination –
Following will be the format of RAT examination -
1. Question paper - 100 MCQ questions.
2. Maximum marks - 100.
3. Time duration - 120 minutes.
4. Question paper will have - 2 sections.
5. Section-1 - general questions (aptitude) – 60 marks.
6. Section-2 - subject specific questions – 40 marks.
7. Each question will have choices like (a) – (b) – (c) – (d)
8. Each question - 1 mark.
9. Each correct answer - 1 mark.
10. No negative marks for wrong answer.

Personal Interview -
RAT examination will be followed by personal interview of each candidate to evaluate the research aptitude and skills of the candidate. Hence, all PhD candidates are advised to prepare a temporary research proposal and present the same before the Admission Committee at the time of interview. It would be desirable, if the research proposal presented at the time of interview, is finally adopted for doctoral work; but if a candidate so desires, he/she will be allowed to take on a different research project for their doctoral study after admission to PhD programme. Candidates should bring soft copy of their presentation in a pen drive and hard copy for submission. Candidates should bring along research papers and documents related to research grants, funding schemes, awards, honors or any other credit certificates etc. for producing the same during interview.

Overall selection criteria for admission will be based on RAT result (40% weightage) and interview performance (60% weightage). The result of admission process will be declared on the RKU website (www.rku.ac.in) within 5 days from date of conducting RAT examination. Selected candidates will approach RKU approved guides (list available on website), obtain their consent and submit the same within seven days from date of result declaration. Guide consent form can be downloaded from RKU website.

Admission to PhD programme will be confirmed by the university on receipt of signed guide consent form, 1st year fees, NOC from current employer, verification of original documents etc.



Doctoral Research Committee
After admission, a Doctoral Research Committee (DRC) shall be appointed for each scholar, which shall guide the research scholar in all matters of the Ph.D. program including prescribing of coursework. Within 3 months, the admitted research scholar will prepare a research proposal in one of the areas identified at the time of admission which will be examined by the Doctoral Research Committee (DRC) consisting of Dean of the concerned school, head of the department, Guide, Co-guide, if any, and one expert to be nominated by the Provost (VC). On recommendation of DRC, the final shape of the research proposal along with tentative title of the topic of research shall be decided.

A research scholar whose research proposal is rejected at 1st DRC will appear in next DRC and his/her count of 6 monitoring committees will start thereafter. His/her synopsis submission term will be extended by 1 semester.

Pre-registration Coursework Requirement
1. All research scholars for PhD programme are required to acquire prescribed credits, as applicable, through course-work, which shall normally be completed within first two semesters from the date of joining by the research scholars. The lecture courses and laboratory courses will be completed in 1st semester.

2. The coursework offered for PhD programme may include lecture courses, laboratory courses, design courses, self-study courses, mini-project and seminars. The seminars will be of 3 credits, whereas self-study courses will be of 4 credits including a course of 4 credits on Research Methodology comprising of Quantitative Methods and Computer Applications.

3. The research scholar, who fails or is not in a position to complete the coursework in the prescribed time limit as above, due to genuine reason, may file an appeal and on the recommendation of the DRC, the Provost (VC) may grant permission to attempt coursework examination for one additional semester i.e. third semester. In case, a candidate is not able to pass coursework examination even after 3rd semester, his/her admission to PhD programme will be terminated.

Minimum Credit Requirements
The minimum credit requirements for successful completion of PhD coursework will be 11 credits i.e. 2 courses of PG level, each of 4 credits (including 1 course on research methodology) and a seminar of 3 credits. The minimum passing standard will be C+ (minimum 50%) in each course (subject). The courses may be taken from those offered by other departments/interdisciplinary groups.


Regular Registration
The research scholar will be allowed to have regular registration for conducting research once he earns the minimum CGPA in coursework as mentioned above.

Monitoring Mechanism
After registration of a research scholar, the DRC will meet the research scholar at least once in a semester and monitor his/her progress and based on the suggestions of the committee, the research scholar will take follow-up actions. A research scholar will attend total 6 monitoring committees (excluding DRC and synopsis presentation), from which minimum 5 successful attempts are compulsory before submission of synopsis. Failure in more than 1 attempt will result into extension of synopsis submission term by corresponding no. of semesters.

Time Limit for Submission of Thesis
Normally, the research scholar will submit the synopsis/ thesis only after duration of 3 years from the date of first admission. The maximum time limit for submission of PhD synopsis/thesis shall be 4 years from the date of first admission. Provided however, that the Provost (VC), on the recommendation of the DRC and Dean, Faculty of Doctoral Studies & Research, may after 4 years, permit the research scholar to renew the registration up to 6 years, on payment of due fees.
